The website from the Texas Education Agency provides educators with previously released Tests of Knowledge and Skills.
This test has been phased out and replaced with the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness. However, I still like to use this site because you can still access the tests and they have both an accommodated and modified version.
It is similar to the ELPA and I often use some of the readings to help students prepare for the ELPA -R. The selections tend to be a bit longer than what they might encounter on the ELPA. There are both multiple choice questions and short answer.
I also like the fact that there are accommodated and modified versions available. When working with modified students, I find it a challenge to find work that doesn’t appear childish but is still at their reading level. The modified versions are still quite challenging and I often have to move down several grade levels but it provides me with more options for challenging students.
Below is a sample test of a grade 9 modified reading test.
